MAGUY MARIN: ABOUT "UMWELT"

Performed in France and in Europe for the first time in 2004, "Umwelt" generated a great admiration in the world of dance as much as a stormy almost violent welcome. Yet, Maguy Marin belongs to the most appreciated French choreographers since "May B" or her version of "Cendrillon ("Cinderella").

La Cinémathèque de la Danse wanted to support "Umwelt", linking this artwork with her previous ones which are already considered as classics of contemporary dance. Indeed, in Maguy Marin’s previous choreographies, notably filled with the idea that dancing is not only a show but even more, some kind of commitment, we already find hints which foresee the creation of "Umwelt".
